Harnessing the Arcane: The Tale of the Echoing Chalice

Ah, sit back, ye fledgling spellcasters and wide-eyed adventurers, for I shall recount the tale of the Echoing Chalice, a magic item of my own craft, imbued with the very essence of arcane profundity. This is no trinket or bauble, but a vessel of potent magic, a creation born of necessity and ingenuity, forged in the fiery crucibles of my relentless pursuit of power and knowledge.

The inception of the Echoing Chalice was birthed from a dire need, a moment when the tide of battle turned against me, and my allies were scattered and broken. As I stood amidst the chaos, my magic spent, I vowed never to find myself so vulnerably depleted again. The Chalice was my answer—a reservoir of arcane energy, a wellspring to quench my thirst for magical supremacy.

Crafting such an artifact was no minor feat. It required the harnessing of ancient techniques, some whispered in the dark corners of forbidden libraries, others gleaned from the very fabric of the cosmos. The Chalice was forged from star-metal, bathed in the light of a lunar eclipse, and quenched in the mystical waters of the River Ethrendar, where the veils between worlds are thin and malleable.

The core of the Echoing Chalice’s power lies in its ability to absorb and store magical energies. Whenever I cast a spell, the Chalice echoes that spell, holding its essence within its depths. Then, at a command, it can release this stored energy, allowing me to cast the spell once more without expending my own reserves. But beware, for such power comes with a price—each spell echoed strains the fabric of reality, and overuse could unleash consequences most dire.

The Echoing Chalice proved its worth during the Siege of Durnholde, where legions of shadow fiends laid waste to the land. As my comrades fell, I stood firm, the Chalice at my side. Wave after wave of dark magic crashed against me, but I remained unyielded, the Chalice echoing my spells back into the fray, doubling my assault until the fiends were vanquished and the siege was broken.

Thus, the Echoing Chalice has become an extension of my will, a testament to my resolve and my mastery over the arcane. It is a reminder that in the hands of a warlock of my caliber, magic is not merely a tool but an unstoppable force, a dominion over the very threads of reality.

For Dungeons & Dragons 5e:

Echoing Chalice
Wondrous item, very rare (requires attunement by a spellcaster)

The Echoing Chalice is a vessel of ancient power, allowing its user to reclaim expended magical energy. While holding the chalice, you gain the following benefits:

  • Spell Echo: After casting a spell of 1st through 5th level, you can use a bonus action to command the chalice to echo the spell. The chalice stores the spell’s essence, allowing you to cast the same spell again without expending a spell slot. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
  • Arcane Reservoir: The chalice has 3 charges. You can use an action and expend one charge to regain one expended spell slot up to a maximum of 3rd level. The chalice regains all expended charges at dawn.
  • Veil of the Arcanist: While attuned to the chalice, you gain advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

If the Echoing Chalice is used to echo a spell of 6th level or higher (which it can do so once, regaining this ability at dawn), the user must make a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, the user suffers a random effect from the Wild Magic Surge table, representing the strain of echoing such powerful magic.

For Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE):

Echoing Chalice
Arcane Device, Legendary

The Echoing Chalice is a relic of immense arcane potential, suited for the most seasoned spellcasters. When a spellcaster uses the chalice, they gain the following abilities:

  • Spell Echo: Once per session, the chalice allows the user to “echo” a Power they have just cast. The next round, the same Power can be activated again without spending Power Points or requiring concentration, though it must target the same area or subjects and use the same options as the original casting.
  • Power Preservation: The chalice has the ability to store Power Points. It contains 10 Power Points by default and regains 1d6+2 spent Power Points each day at dawn. A spellcaster can use these points to cast their Powers.
  • Magical Fortitude: The bearer of the chalice gains +2 to all rolls made to resist magical effects and Powers.

However, if the chalice’s user attempts to echo a Power that has a Rank higher than their own, they must make a Spirit roll at -2. Failure means the chalice releases a burst of uncontrolled magical energy, causing a backlash effect determined by the GM. This could range from applying a Fatigue
